Hello! My name is Katie and I am so excited to be a part of Paws Abroad and the amazing work that they do!
I’ve been here in Germany for about a year and a half, and luckily found Paws Abroad (PA) about 6 months after we arrived. As an animal lover and activist PA came along at just the right time, and is truly an organization that will not only be an opportunity for me to volunteer for a worthy cause, but also a way for me to harness my passion for animals while living abroad.
Guam boasts beautiful beaches and turquoise waters, a virtual tropical paradise. But after a short time on the island, the true Guam began to emerge. The stray population is never-ending, and the local desire to help is minimal at best. There is one shelter on the whole island to combat the thousands of dogs and cats that roam the streets, not to mention the continual stream of animals left behind by the military. I knew I had to help. I got involved and eventually became the assistant manager of the shelter, and worked tirelessly to combat the abuse and neglect on Guam, as well as to educate the masses (including the military) on proper animal treatment.
Eventually we moved to Phoenix, AZ where I worked at the AZ Human Society and progressed in my quest to ensure adequate animal welfare for the local pet population. Here I worked in low cost vaccine clinics as well as side by side with some of Phoenix’s finest Animal Cops.
Out travels then brought us to Germany. As a country Germany is very specific on animal welfare rules and regulations. Unfortunately this doesn’t make it any easier sometimes for military members that have pets. I found PA and have completely embraced their mission to ensure that all of our companion animals have someone to watch over them while their service members are away on assignment. It is crucial that we assist in making sure that animals are no longer left behind, or shuffled from home to home due to military obligation. We can do better, and PA is helping to make that happen.
I am beyond excited to be a part of Paws Abroad, and cannot wait to see the amazing things that our organization will accomplish.
